Short-Sightedness/Myopia
Vision is a complex process where light entering the eye is collected and focussed by the lens until it forms an image at the back of the eye which is then interpreted by the brain. When this image falls short of the back of the eye, as in myopia or short-sightedness, the brain cannot interpret the image clearly and blurring occurs.
Once short-sightedness is diagnosed, remedial glasses are prescribed which act to push the focus of the image further back until it can be interpreted fully by the brain.
The action of focussing the light is carried out by the lens of the eye through changing its shape by muscles attached to it. These muscles keep their tone by working and, once glasses are worn, they do not need to work hard any more and become "lazy". As the muscle tone gets worse so does focussing and then we enter a cycle of the inevitable increase in the strength of our glasses and a worsening of our short-sightedness or myopia.
The muscles of the eye are no different to any other muscle of the body and their tone is affected by the same factors which include:
- Exercise (use it or lose it is never more aptly applied!)
- Dehydration even when hardly noticeable or obvious
- Infection especially viruses including from vaccinations
- Toxins such as metals (arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury etc), chemicals (pesticides, herbicides, preservatives etc), radiation (DECT phones, mobiles and masts, air travel etc)
- Drugs including statins, steroids, muscle relaxants etc
- Essential nutrients such as amino acids, vitamins, minerals and Omega 3 and 6 oils
Plus factors which are specific for eye muscles
- Lenses which alter focus and light such as sunglasses and coloured lenses
- Injury to eye socket, head and face
- Posture especially of the head and neck
Treatment of myopia is to address the causative factors and to investigate a regime of eye exercises and nutritional supplements to improve the short-sightedness and avoid interception with corrective lenses.
