Rheumatoid Arthritis
Affects 3% of the population and a younger age group and may involve any joint. Unlike osteoarthritis where the symptoms are confined to the joints, in rheumatoid arthritis there are systemic symptoms as well which range from lymph node enlargement and the joints becoming hot and swollen reminiscent of an infection, to lethargy, anaemia and even osteoporosis. Conventional treatment is similar to that for osteoarthritis but, as this is considered an autoimmune condition, there is more reliance on steroids and the use of even more potent drugs to deal with the immune system.
