Reflux/OesophagitisThe presence of a valve at the entrance of the oesophagus or gullet, into the stomach, stops contents of finding their way back up, reflux. Should this valve become incompetent and reflux takes place on a more than "every now and then" basis, the lining of the lower portion of the oesophagus could become inflamed. This inflammation from contact with the acid contents of the stomach gives rise to oesophagitis. Valve incompetence and subsequently, oesophagitis, may be attributed to a variety of factors which affect the stomach lining leading to inflammation. The causes of this inflammation must be divided into: Food allergy/intolerance especially to dairy and grains (wheat in particular) Reaction to toxins such as chemicals (pesticides, herbicides, food additives etc), and heavy metals (mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium etc) Medicinal drugs such as the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs, antibiotics, steroids etc All of which interfere with enzyme systems creating an imbalance in the all-important ratio of good bacterial flora, probiotics, to the not-so-good commensal organisms in the gut. Antacids and surgery are hardly the answer. The best natural treatment of reflux and oesophagitis is to identify and eliminate the responsible foods, pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungus/Candida, and parasites) and the toxins, to replenish the probiotics and prebiotics - fibre, both soluble and insoluble from grains, fruits and vegetables - which feed them, and to support the immune system with the required amino acids, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids of omega 3 and 6 which all go to help heal the stomach lining and prevent further symptoms of reflux and oesophagitis.
