PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)A cyst is the product of either an infection or a breakdown of cells which become filled with fluid. As the ovaries normally mature and shed an egg every month, there is more potential for either the sack of the developing egg becoming a cyst or the egg itself breaking down to form a cyst and leading to a polycystic ovary. When these cysts are present with other symptoms including menstrual problems, excess follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) or testosterone, lack of libido, hirsutism (excess hair) and so on, polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS is diagnosed. The main caused is thought to be excess estrogens in our water, milk and animal products from the contraceptive pill or the oestrogen mimics which are now prolific in our diet and environment from pesticides and herbicides, perfumes and cosmetics and most importantly, plastics used in packaging. These bind to the oestrogen receptors leaving the naturally produced oestrogen free and giving the impression of excess oestrogen. This in turn influences the first phase of the menstrual cycle when the egg is matured and gives rise to PCOS. Infection by pathogenic organisms (bacteria, viruses, fungus/Candida and parasites) also plays a role in PCOS as do toxins such as metals (arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury etc), chemicals (pesticides, herbicides, preservatives etc), radiation (DECT phones, mobiles and masts, air travel etc) and drugs (NSAIDs, steroids, the Pill etc).
