Helicobacter PyloriA chance finding that a large number of sufferers of peptic ulcers, especially gastric ulcers, also had abnormally high counts of Helicobacter pylori, a normally quiet resident of the gut, prompted scientists to conclude that ulcers were the result of an infection with this organism. This revelation was all the more remarkable since the treatment of choice of bacterial infections was antibiotics, albeit in the case of H. pylori it is in combination with an anti fungal and an antacid. The fact that H. pylori is also present in a large proportion of the population without suffering from ulcers and also, that 20% of those with ulcers do not test positive to having it, only goes to show that ulcers could be the result of a number of causes and not simply an infection (see peptic ulcers). There is a very strong chance that the use of antibiotics in some people could mutate the Helicobacter pylori bacterium to become the pathogenic organism that would give rise to an infection and ulcers. The best natural treatment of H. pylori, as with all infections, is to identify and eliminate the responsible pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungus/Candida, and parasites) and the toxins, to replenish the probiotics and prebiotics - fibre, both soluble and insoluble from grains, fruits and vegetables - which feed them, and to support the immune system with the required amino acids, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids of omega 3 and 6.
