When I get old and start losing my mind
The Problem
We are all aware of the decline in mental acuity during the senior years. In fact the steep rise in Dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, lack of motivation (apathy), lethargy, depression, anxiety…. simply goes on unabated and we seem helpless to stem the tide.
The Cost
The cost to society is incalculable and not only in money terms but also in human terms. After all, what is the real cost of losing the most affluent, experienced and influential group in society? The leaders, the thinkers, the teachers, the parents and grandparents, the investors ….. Add to that the cost of care and you begin to appreciate the size of the problem especially that we are living longer and the birth-rate is in decline.
Current Treatment
Conventional treatment is unpredictable and drugs come with serious side-effects which often make an already bad situation even worse. The sequela of the conditions themselves as well as the medication will often result in accidents and fractures with unimaginable ramifications.
The Cause
Energy is the only currency of the brain. Deprive the brain of energy and suffer the consequences.
Energy is derived from food, and especially glucose, using enzymes and oxygen. The problem arises as we get older when there is a decline in digestion and absorption of the necessary nutrients to support brain function. This leads to tiredness and will, in turn, precipitate a sedentary lifestyle with reduced exercise levels and reduced muscle function essential in metabolism and joint support (arthritis!).
Lack of or reduced exercise will result in reduced oxygen intake and reduced brain function. Reduced brain function means altered brain chemistry and results in altered motor function and emotions and behaviour – the same is true of the young!
The Solution
1. Supply the necessary nutrients to ensure:
a. optimal enzyme function for digestion and absorption
b. adequate metabolism of food to glucose
c. effective transport of oxygen to the tissues
d. efficient energy production
2. Change the diet and lifestyle (e.g. the correct food and exercise)
3. Stimulation of the 5 senses (‘use it or lose it’ is very true for the brain).
The most encouraging thing about all of this is that everything is already in place to introduce and implement the changes. All that is needed is EDUCATION. Add to that a willingness to change our thinking for the better and to embrace a feeling of excitement and optimism, and the results are inevitable: enormous health and cost savings at modest or minimal outlay. In reality we have no other option and we should put this into action as soon as possible.
There is no downside and the benefits are amazing.
With warm regards
Sam Shohet
