Carpal Tunnel SyndromeThe wrist joint, like all specialised joints of the skeleton, is held together by ligaments and capsules of fibrous tissue. Inflammation within the joint causes pressure on the nerves from the arm to the fingers and gives rise to the pain, tingling and even numbness of carpal tunnel syndrome. The conventional medicine approach to carpal tunnel syndrome is to use steroids with their litany of documented side effects, as injections into the wrist, to reduce the swelling with complete disregard to the cause of the inflammation, or, surgery to stretch the fibrous tissue which forms the sleeve of the wrist joint - the tunnel. The many causes of inflammation of carpal tunnel syndrome must be addressed, including that of injury sustained by over activity of the joint. These include food allergy/intolerance, pathogenic organisms (bacteria, viruses, fungus/Candida and parasites), toxins such as metals (arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury etc), chemicals (pesticides, herbicides, preservatives etc), radiation (DECT phones, mobiles and masts, air travel etc), drugs (NSAIDs - ironically the very ones used to tackle the pain of carpal tunnel syndrome, steroids etc), and not forgetting malabsorption of essential nutrients such as amino acids, vitamins, minerals and especially fatty acids of EPA and DHA. All of this will release inflammatory chemicals within the body, creating an environment for deterioration of our joints.
Apart from a very brief period of rest followed quickly by rehabilitative exercise, the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome is to address the causative factors and to supply the essential tools for reduction of inflammation and proper healing and regeneration of healthy tissue, which include amino acids, vitamins, minerals and especially the omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, as well as probiotics, soluble and insoluble fibre from fruits, vegetables and whole grains, not forgetting adequate amounts of water, a regular daily exercise regime and sunlight, when possible.
