Bipolar DisorderAlso referred to as manic-depression, bipolar disorder is the extreme of both anxiety and depression (see notes on these conditions) but taking place at almost the same time! The term bipolar refers to the two hemispheres of the brain where each lobe is attributed a different function. It is thought that the left is the logical, calculating hemisphere which imparts the driven, extremely goal oriented episodes of the bipolar affected individual, whereas the artistic, casual right hemisphere is thought to account for the creative aspect of bipolar sufferers.
As in all mental and psychological disorders, neurotransmitter imbalance plays a big role, only in bipolar disorder the resultant mood fluctuations take place more often and are more rapid than is seen in other psychological disorders. Neurotransmitter balance may be affected by food allergy/intolerance, pathogenic organisms (bacteria, viruses, fungus/Candida and parasites), toxins such as metals (aluminium, lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium etc), chemicals (pesticides, herbicides, food additives and preservatives etc), radiation (mobiles and phone masts, DECT phones, background radiation, air travel etc), medicinal drugs ( anti-malarials, anti depressants, drugs for hypertension etc) and not forgetting emotional highs and lows such as grief, fear, despair, etc from the stresses of life.
Treatment of bipolar disorder involves removal of the possible causes and ensuring an adequate supply of the major factors in healing and regeneration such as amino acids, vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids of omega 3 and 6, the friendly bacteria, probiotics and soluble and insoluble fibre from whole grains, fruit and vegetables.
